Pew Research Center conducted a survey in major countries around the world to assess what is being considered as a major global threat. It is important to take note of the survey as the risk perception varies across countries and they may be key determinants in the policy formation of that country.
Pew Research Center polled across 38 countries and on eight different risks; ISIS, Global Climate change, Cyber-attack from other countries, the condition of the global economy, a large number of refugees leaving countries like Iraq and Syria, U.S. power and influence, Russia’s power and influence, and China’s power and influence.
ISIS: ISIS is named top threat in 18 of the surveyed countries and 62 percent globally cited ISIS as a top threat. 97 percent in Lebanon cited ISIS as a top threat. 88 percent in France and Spain, 85 percent in Italy, and 74 percent in the United States consider ISIS as a top threat.
Global Climate Change: 13 countries and 61 percent globally cited global climate change as a top most threat. Spain remains most concerned about Climate change in entire Europe.
Cyber-attack from other countries: Cyber-attack concerns are highest in South Korea with 77 percent respondent expressing concerns, followed by the United States (71 percent).
The conditions of the Global Economy: It is hardly a wonder given the state of the economy, Greece was most concerned about economy. 88 percent of the respondents cited the economy as the top concern. Concerns with regard to the economy were high in South Korea (77 percent), and Spain (72 percent).
Large numbers of refugees leaving countries like Iraq and Syria: Countries suffering from the refugee crisis cited this as a top threat in large numbers, 67 percent in Greece, 66 percent in Hungary, 65 percent in Italy, and 60 percent in Poland cited this as a major threat.
US power and influence: Some countries like Turkey (72 percent), South Korea (70 percent), Japan (62 percent), and Mexico (61 percent) consider U.S. power and influence as a major threat. Interestingly only 37 percent in Russia consider it as a major threat. 35 percent globally (38 countries) considers US power and influence as a major threat.
Russia’s power and influence: 31 percent globally (38 countries) consider Russia’s power and influence as a major threat. The number is high for Poland (65 percent), Turkey (54 percent), and Jordon (49 percent). 47 percent in the US consider it as a major threat.
China’s power and influence: 31 percent globally (38 countries) considers China’s power and influence as a major threat. The number is high for South Korea (83 percent), Vietnam (80 percent), and Japan (64 percent).
