Gaza’s Health Ministry said hospital generator oil has run out, putting remaining units at risk of mechanical failure and threatening power for services that provide life-saving care.

The ministry said Gaza hospitals collectively require more than 2,500 liters of generator oil a month. Limited emergency supplies cannot keep generators running for long, it said, given their extended operating hours and maintenance needs.

The ministry warned that patients could be affected if power is interrupted to vital hospital departments providing life-saving care. It urged relevant parties to ensure oil and spare parts can enter Gaza.

Anadolu Agency reported that Israeli restrictions on the entry of oil and spare parts have contributed to the generators’ risk. Anadolu also reported that the ministry said Sept. 16 that 70% of Gaza’s hospital generators were already out of service amid shortages of fuel, oil and spare parts.

The warning adds to volunteer doctors’ accounts of equipment shortages at damaged Gaza hospitals.
