Geregu Power Plc said a Siemens Energy transformer contract is intended to reduce equipment failure risks at its 435-megawatt plant in Kogi State and support reliable electricity transfers to Nigeria’s national grid.
The three transformers are designated for generating units GT11, GT12 and GT13, which together have an installed capacity of 435 megawatts. Geregu said transformer problems could disrupt the plant’s connection to the grid and affect its operations.
Siemens Energy will oversee the equipment’s design and production, conduct testing and arrange delivery. Geregu plans to take part in factory acceptance tests before the transformers are shipped to Nigeria.
BusinessDay reported that transformer failures can interrupt the transfer of electricity from plant generators to the grid, reducing the facility’s contribution to supply and adding maintenance costs. The outlet framed the purchase amid pressure on Nigerian power generators to improve the performance of existing plants while facing electricity supply-chain challenges.
The plant’s three units use Siemens V94.2 gas turbine technology, BusinessDay reported. Siemens Energy equipment is already in use at the Ajaokuta facility, according to the outlet, which described the contract as building on the companies’ existing relationship.
Geregu linked the procurement to its wider spending on maintaining and updating critical plant infrastructure, according to its statement. The company did not disclose the agreement’s value or provide a delivery, installation or commissioning schedule.
