Germany has named Army Chief Christian Freuding as its next top military officer, a change that will put a new leader at the head of the Bundeswehr in February 2027.
The Defense Ministry announced the selection Thursday. Freuding is set to replace Carsten Breuer, who was chosen to lead NATO’s Military Committee. The committee provides military advice to the alliance’s political leaders.
Reuters reported that Freuding oversaw German arms deliveries to Kyiv for several years before taking charge of the Army in October 2025. Reuters reported that he backed adopting battlefield technology from Ukraine and began forming a drone unit for the German Army.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Freuding represented the Bundeswehr’s values and had shown he could make prompt decisions in difficult circumstances. Pistorius said Freuding had a “clear moral compass.” Freuding is scheduled to take the post in February 2027.
