Germany’s import-price index rose 10.4% in September from a year earlier, its largest annual increase since November 2022, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) said Friday.
The annual rate accelerated from 8.3% in August and 6.8% in July. From August to September, the overall index increased 2.1%.
Energy and intermediate goods prices had the biggest impact on the annual increase. Energy prices were up 61.8% from September 2025 and 14.5% from August. Intermediate goods prices rose 11.1% year over year and 0.5% month over month.
The rise extended beyond energy: import prices excluding energy were 5.5% higher than a year earlier and increased 0.5% from August. Electricity import prices rose 96.2% from a year earlier. Mineral oil products rose 81.3%, crude oil 59.3%, natural gas 53.9% and hard coal 25.1% from a year earlier.
Destatis linked the pressure on energy prices to the war in the Middle East. The index is based on prices German businesses agree to pay for goods from abroad; its calculation excludes taxes and customs duties.
