Global Geo-political Series: Key updates from across the world

Here are some key events to keep a tab on,

  • EU, Catalonia, and Spain: Catalan’s independence leader Carles Puigdemont and other four prominent independence leader have surrendered to the Belgian police, which received arrest warrant from the Spanish government. However, they have received bail. Catalans continue to protest in Barcelona against Spanish direct rule.
     
  • Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammad bin-Salman, who replaced his elder cousin Mohammad bin-Nayef to become next in line to the throne after his father King Salman by a royal decree has further tightened his grip on power as the newly formed anti-corruption committee arrests 11 princes, several senior officials and incumbent ministers. The king had decreed the creation of a powerful new anti-corruption committee, headed by the crown prince, only hours before the committee ordered the arrests.
     
  • North Korea, U.S., Japan and South Korea: During his first Asian trip, the U.S. President Donald Trump maintained war-like rhetoric towards North Korea, Speaking in Japan, he once again said that the strategic patience with North Korea is over and reiterated the U.S. commitment to the security of its allies in Asia. 
     
  • Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Yemen: Saudi Arabia has accused Iran up being responsible for the ballistic missile launched from Yemen that targeted Riyadh airport on Saturday, warning that it could be "considered an act of war." In a statement in the wee hours of Monday, Saudi Arabia laid the blame for the attack directly at Iran's feet, claiming it would not have happened had Iran not been supporting Houthi rebels in Yemen. Iran denied any responsibility. In a separate event, a Saudi Arabian prince, Mansour bin Muqrin, has been killed along with several other officials in a helicopter crash the near the country’s border with Yemen. Eight people were on board the helicopter, including the Undersecretary and the Secretary of the Asir Region.
