Global Geo-political Series: Liberals all around the world need to take lessons from two major upsets of 2016

Liberal values all around the world under threat and for that, liberals have only themselves to blame. First, it was Brexit, which reverted four-decade-old political project and then it was Donald Trump, who with his right-wing ideas got elected as the President of the United States. In both of the cases, left-wing liberals continue to express their anger.

Many of United Kingdom’s European partners prefer the idea of making an example of Britain in terms of trade relationship so that there would be no one else aspiring to move out of the European Union. In doing so, they ignore that their ideas are under threat from the right-wing nationalists, just because they tend to ignore the wishes and desire of common people. Left-wing ideas of the liberals have become the ideas of the elite those are why recent survey from Pew Research Centre shows that more than 80 percent of the people in Greece are disgusted by the ideas of the European Union. More than 90 percent of the people want powers to be returned to the national parliament from Brussels. Greece, however, is not alone with such wishes, more than 50 percent of the people in countries like Cyprus, Italy, Spain and even in France opposes more power transfer to Brussels.

Similar happened to the United States, millions of people who back nationalism over globalism, small people over elite put against the dismay of the current political class and world leaders, an outsider like Donald Trump to the White House.

The reelection of Vladimir Putin in Russia, selection of Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines, Selection of Narendra Modi in India, continue to show that liberals are under threat not only in Europe abut around the world.
