Global Geopolitical Series: Baghdadi’s return to limelight unlikely to bear well for Trump’s ISIS narrative

President Trump is likely to face harsh criticism with an election year approaching over his narrative that ISIS has been defeated in the Middle East and all thanks go to his administration for its toughening stance on fighting ISIS rebels in Syria. At numerous events, president Trump not only claimed victory over ISIS, but he also had graphical presentation showing territories in Syria held by ISIS before his election and after his election.

However, the return of Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi in the limelight this week is not likely to bear well for his re-election campaign, where critics would point out that the key target, the leader of this dreaded group has so far escaped U.S. campaign against ISIS, which keeps the threat alive.

For the first time since 2014, the leader of Islamic State has appeared in video footage, putting an end to the long-running rumors of his death. The video was published by ISIS’s media arm on Monday, where it can be seen that the terrorist leader is discussing Jihads, while calmly sitting beside an AK-47 assault rifle. From the content of the video, experts suggest that it must have been filmed recently.
