Global Geopolitical Series: Japan invites DPRK to bilateral summit

Japan has reportedly sent out an invitation to the Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK), better known as North Korea for a bilateral summit as global leaders scramble for bilateral negotiations ahead of much anticipated bilateral summit between North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong Un and the U.S. President Donald Trump, which is likely to be held sometime in May. A bilateral meeting between South and North Korea is taking place today in the truce village near North-South border and earlier this week, North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong Un traveled in his father’s armored train to Beijing and held a bilateral discussion with the Chinese president Xi Jinping.

Japan’s Ashi newspaper reported on Thursday that Japan is very eager for a bilateral summit, if possible a leaders’ summit and expressed such to North Korea, which reportedly considering after receiving the invitation. According to the paper, the Japanese government has expressed a wish to host a leaders meeting, via the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan or Chongryong, which is Pyongyang’s de facto embassy in Japan.
