Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephonic conversation with the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and discussed a range of issues such as Palestine Peace Process, the crisis in Yemen, and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), better known as the Iran Nuclear Agreement. The due reportedly discussed the results of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress, which was held in Sochi on January 30. They pointed out that the decisions taken in Sochi are designed to boost a political settlement in Syria based on UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and help normalize the situation in the region overall.
According to Kremlin Press Service, both Presidents confirmed their commitment to the implementation of JCPOA as a major factor of international stability and security. Their confirmed commitment comes at a time when the agreement is being threatened by the U.S. President Donald Trump. The agreement requires the U.S. President to certify Iran’s commitment to the deal and sign waiver on automatic sanctions on Iran in every 120 days. Trump has refused to certify Iran’s commitment to the agreement last year, despite the global leaders urging him to do so and signaled in January that he is signing the waiver for the last time if the concerns raised by his administration are not addressed to.
