The speeches at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York by American and European leaders provide more evidence that the chasm that has been widening between Europe and America since the election of President Donald Trump in the United States as he sharply changed the course of U.S. policies by exiting the Iran nuclear deal, TPP negotiations, and Paris Climate Accord, is now wider than ever before, at least since the second world war, which is not surprising given President Trump’s aptness to challenge long-term doctrine.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly, President Trump declared that under his leadership the U.S. would choose “independence and cooperation over global governance, control, and domination…….We will never surrender America’s sovereignty to an unelected, unaccountable, global bureaucracy. America is governed by Americans. We reject the ideology of globalism, and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism. Around the world, responsible nations must defend against threats to sovereignty not just from global governance, but also from other, new forms of coercion and domination.”
He also launched a scathing attack against Iran nuclear agreement and its leadership, “Iran’s leaders sow chaos, death, and destruction. They do not respect their neighbors or borders, or the sovereign rights of nations. Instead, Iran’s leaders plunder the nation’s resources to enrich themselves and to spread mayhem across the Middle East and far beyond. The Iranian people are rightly outraged that their leaders have embezzled billions of dollars from Iran’s treasury, seized valuable portions of the economy, and looted the people’s religious endowments, all to line their own pockets and send their proxies to wage war. Not good. Iran’s neighbors have paid a heavy toll for the region’s [regime’s] agenda of aggression and expansion. That is why so many countries in the Middle East strongly supported my decision to withdraw the United States from the horrible 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal and re-impose nuclear sanctions. The Iran deal was a windfall for Iran’s leaders. In the years since the deal was reached, Iran’s military budget grew nearly 40 percent. The dictatorship used the funds to build nuclear-capable missiles, increase internal repression, finance terrorism, and fund havoc and slaughter in Syria and Yemen. The United States has launched a campaign of economic pressure to deny the regime the funds it needs to advance its bloody agenda. Last month, we began re-imposing hard-hitting nuclear sanctions that had been lifted under the Iran deal. Additional sanctions will resume November 5th, and more will follow. And we’re working with countries that import Iranian crude oil to cut their purchases substantially.”
On the other hand, French President Emmanuel Macron took an opposite stance to President Trump embracing the Iran nuclear agreement and multilateralism. On Iran deal, President Macron said, “What will bring a real solution to the situation in Iran and what has already stabilized it? The law of the strongest? Pressure from only one side? No! We know that Iran was on a nuclear military path but what stopped it? The 2015 Vienna accord…..We should not aggravate regional tensions but rather, through dialogue and multilateralism, pursue a broader agenda that allows us to address all the concerns caused by Iranian policies – nuclear, ballistic, regional".
President Macron also delivered a veiled criticism on the Israel-Palestinian issue to the United States, “What can resolve the crisis between Israel and Palestine? Not unilateral initiatives, nor trampling on the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to legitimate peace. There is no credible alternative to the two-state solution."
He also called on the states to not forge trade agreement with countries which is not part of the Paris Climate Accord. President Donald Trump exited the accord after assuming office.
The actions that have been taken so far also points to widening differences. While President Trump exited the Iran nuclear agreement and started imposing sanctions on Iran, the European leaders announced setting up of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to bypass the sanctions and announced €18 mil
