As Iran protests rage into its seventh day, where more than a dozen have been killed and several injured, the United States has called for an emergency meeting of the United Nation’s Security Council (UNSC). On Tuesday, US Ambassador Haley called for urgent meetings in the UNSC and the UN Human Rights Council to back the anti-government protesters. The United Nations has announced that UNSC will convene on Friday to discuss the situation in Iran and the Middle East.
United States’ UN ambassador Nikki Haley’s comments make it quite clear that the United States see the protest as an opportunity for regime change. She said, “The UN must speak out…In the days ahead, we will be calling for an emergency session both here in New York and at the Human Rights Council in Geneva. We must not be silent. The people of Iran are crying out for freedom.” Haley urged the international community to stand with the rioters and not make the same mistake of 2009 when the internal community didn’t act despite countrywide protests against the election of Ahmadinejad that resulted in 36 deaths.
While Iran has slapped back at the United States over its support of the protests, President Donald Trump posted tweet after tweet, slamming the Iranian regime and in support of the protesters. He tweeted, “Iran is failing at every level despite the terrible deal made with them by the Obama Administration. The great Iranian people have been repressed for many years. They are hungry for food & for freedom. Along with human rights, the wealth of Iran is being looted. TIME FOR CHANGE!”
He followed up,
“The people of Iran are finally acting against the brutal and corrupt Iranian regime. All of the money that President Obama so foolishly gave them went into terrorism and into their “pockets.” The people have little food, big inflation and no human rights. The U.S. is watching!”
And again,
“Such respect for the people of Iran as they try to take back their corrupt government. You will see great support from the United States at the appropriate time!”
However, any major resolution is unlikely to get passed through the UNSC as Iran’s key ally Russia is likely to vet any such move.
