The remastered release of the iconic “GoldenEye 007” was finally announced on Tuesday for Xbox consoles and Nintendo Switch. Microsoft confirmed, however, that the game will not support online multiplayer features on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
“GoldenEye 007” was one of the big surprises at the Nintendo Direct showcase on Tuesday. The trailer for its Switch version indicated that the game would support online multiplayer on the hybrid portable console. In Rare’s announcement on Xbox Wire, though, the developer promised a host of new features in the game but only mentioned local multiplayer.
Microsoft later confirmed that online multiplayer would not be available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. “While there are no plans to include online multiplayer as part of GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Game Pass, Xbox is focused on bringing this title to players in the way they fondly remember, including local multiplayer mode, allowing up to four players to take to the couch in a battle of wits and skill,” the company told VGC.
In the same announcement post from Rare, the developer said the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S versions of “GoldenEye 007” will feature familiar features, including the classic campaign mode, difficulty levels, and cheats. But making local multiplayer something to look forward to is the return of the game’s split-screen feature. It will allow up to four players to join in a match.
The remastered “GoldenEye 007” will also come with new features for Xbox players. Rare said the game will have improved control options, including support for dual analog sticks. The game can also run with native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD if players’ TV screens support it. Rare said the remaster will also offer “consistent refresh rates” on Xbox consoles, but did not offer specifics.
As leaked several times before the announcement, the modern “GoldenEye 007” will offer new achievements to unlock on Xbox. Two separate leaks last January and February hinted at up to 55 new Xbox achievements that could give players up to 1,000 Gamerscore.
Rare did not announce a release date yet, but the remastered “GoldenEye 007” will be available on Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch Online. Players who purchased the 30-game collection Rare Replay are also getting the new version for free on Xbox.
