Tourist accommodation arrivals in Greece rose 2.6% from a year earlier in August 2026 as short-stay establishments grew faster than hotels and campsites, provisional figures from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) showed.
ELSTAT recorded 7,429,931 arrivals and 34,685,695 overnight stays across hotels, similar establishments, campsites and short-stay accommodation establishments. Overnight stays rose 2.1% from August 2025. The 2026 figures are provisional, while the 2025 comparison figures are final.
Arrivals at short-stay establishments climbed 5.2% to 2,184,311. Overnight stays in that category increased 4.6% to 10,272,315. Hotels, similar establishments and campsites registered 5,245,620 arrivals, up 1.5%, and 24,413,380 overnight stays, up 1.1%.
Nonresidents accounted for 5,700,736 arrivals, or 76.7% of the total, after a 2.9% annual increase. They generated 29,144,051 overnight stays, or 84% of the total, up 2.3%. Arrivals by residents rose 1.7% to 1,729,195, while their overnight stays increased 1.2% to 5,541,644.
ELSTAT’s residence categories refer to where travelers live, regardless of citizenship. Its survey counts arrivals at establishments in its tourist accommodation register when travelers stay at least one night. The agency estimates results for establishments that do not respond to the survey.
An August stay averaged 4.7 days, unchanged from a year earlier. The average was 5.1 days for nonresidents and 3.2 days for residents. Those different lengths of stay help explain why nonresidents’ share of overnight stays exceeded their share of arrivals.
Separate Bank of Greece data showed a 13.4% annual rise in nonresident arrivals in August. The bank estimates inbound travel through a survey at entry and exit points; ELSTAT records arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments. The two growth rates measure different kinds of arrivals.
In July, accommodation arrivals rose 2.5% and overnight stays increased 2.0% from a year earlier, ELSTAT reported. The agency is scheduled to publish September accommodation figures Nov. 19 at 5 a.m. ET (10:00 UTC).
