President Isaac Herzog said Thursday, Nov. 5, that he would choose a lawmaker Sunday to try to form Israel's government, as vetoes among political blocs complicate coalition talks.

Factions representing 67 lawmakers recommended Yashar! party leader Gadi Eisenkot for the assignment, while factions representing 46 recommended Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The figures count lawmakers represented by the recommendations, not pledges to join a coalition.

After meeting representatives of all factions elected to the 26th Knesset, Herzog said the law gives him responsibility for deciding who can form a government. He pointed to vetoes among and within the blocs and said he would speak directly with some party leaders before deciding.

Herzog said he plans to make the assignment Sunday, Nov. 8.
