Hurricane Vance reached Category 2 strength over the eastern Pacific on Friday, with 105 mph winds about 685 kilometers south-southwest of Acapulco, the National Hurricane Center said.

At 5 p.m. EDT (21:00 UTC), the storm was moving northwest at 5 mph (7 kph), with a minimum central pressure of 971 millibars. Its winds were equivalent to 165 kph. The NHC’s wind scale places that speed in the Category 2 range.

Earlier Friday, Mexico’s National Water Commission (Conagua) reported Vance at Category 1 strength, about 710 kilometers south-southwest of Acapulco. The NHC forecast further strengthening, with the storm potentially reaching major hurricane strength overnight.

The NHC advisory listed no coastal watches or warnings as of 5 p.m. EDT. The agency urged people along southwestern Mexico’s coast to keep track of Vance. It said storm-driven swells could bring life-threatening surf and rip currents to parts of the southern and southwestern coast over the weekend and into next week.

The update follows EconoTimes’ earlier coverage of Vance’s 90 mph winds and strengthening outlook. The NHC scheduled its next complete advisory for 11 p.m. ET Friday (03:00 UTC Saturday).
