India’s Nifty 50 gained 72.15 points in its Oct. 21 closing auction but still ended 0.34% below its previous session, as late orders narrowed a loss without erasing it.

An independent recording of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) feed showed the index at 22,739.20 at 5:45 a.m. ET, when continuous trading ended for stocks covered by the auction. It stood at 22,811.35 at the auction close, a gain of 0.32% from that reading.

The daily comparison starts with the Oct. 19 close of 22,888.95. Against that level, the Nifty lost 77.60 points. Oct. 19 was the previous trading day because Indian equities were closed for the Dussehra holiday. The BSE Sensex finished Oct. 21 at 73,709.69, down 143.21 points, or 0.19%, from Oct. 19.

The Economic Times reported an unverified indicative Nifty reading near 23,240 early in the auction, roughly 500 points above its pre-auction level. The indicative index is an estimate based on orders received at that point; it does not establish the final close. As orders change, the NSE updates the estimate before matching orders to set closing prices.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) introduced the closing auction on Aug. 3 for cash-market stocks with derivatives contracts. Order entry ends at a randomly chosen point between 5:58 and 6 a.m. ET, and the auction session runs until 6:05 a.m. ET.

The resulting closing prices feed into index calculations, derivatives settlement and mutual fund net asset values (NAVs). SEBI says the auction is intended to improve the execution of large orders and reduce tracking error for passive funds.
