The government of Maharashtra, an Indian state, has decided to implement blockchain technology for securing online data, India Today reported.
Principal Secretary of Information Technology department S.V.R. Srinivas said that the technology could significantly help government in its efforts to secure data in departments including revenue, police, land records, education, and health, among others.
Noting that Bengaluru and Hyderabad are leading in software technology, Srinivas said that the Maharashtra government wants to position Mumbai as the “Fintech” capital of the country.
"We will soon come out with a Financial Technology policy. The new technology will help in ensuring greater trust, transparency and efficiency in the governance,” he said.
The first Maharashtra Technology Summit, to be held in participation with Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) on January 17, is expected to focus on blockchain technology.
In addition to Maharashtra, a number of Indian states have already begun or planning to start their work with blockchain technology, including Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.
