Inside the Banking App: Standard Chartered Brings BTC and Ether to UAE Wealth Clients

For qualified rich UAE consumers, Standard Chartered has formally begun direct Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) trading—a historic event as the first foreign bank to provide this service in the area. This introduction is consistent with official permission from the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). Building on the institutional spot trading started in September, the bank is currently giving qualified individual wealth customers access to cryptocurrencies.

Eligible Professional Investor customers may easily purchase and sell BTC and ETH straight from their current Standard Chartered bank accounts and mobile apps, hence eliminating the need to set up new exchange accounts or handle outside crypto wallets. The service uses a closed-loop approach whereby the bank oversees custody and settlement end-to-end, therefore preserving all assets safely within the Standard Chartered environment. This design limits outside bitcoin withdrawals and self-custody choices even as it helps to reduce third-party transfer risks.

Designed on an execution-only basis, the offer targets customers who fulfill certain wealth requirements—like a minimum relationship requirement—and has a reported spread of up to 2% free from independent transaction or custody costs. Reported trading restrictions for orders span $50 to $50,000 per order (or AED equivalents). Standard Chartered's intention to progressively spread the crypto-trading system to more foreign markets helps to confirm Dubai's reputation as a highly regulated digital-asset center.
