In reaction to harsher U.S. sanctions and a naval blockade impeding traditional banking channels, Iran is progressively using cryptocurrencies, mostly Tether (USDT) and Bitcoin, to help trade and enable export payments. Reportedly loosening foreign-exchange restrictions, Iranian authorities have let exporters directly fund imports using their export profits and repatriate money via local crypto exchanges. Though there are still regulatory concerns for counterparties, this change has made crypto acceptable for cross-border business transactions, with USDT becoming the medium of choice because of its dollar peg and liquidity. Open market foreign currency exchange gives companies more freedom in converting and using their profits.
The U.S. administration's increased secondary sanctions targeting among others Iran's digital asset industry—explicitly identifying crypto as a tool for sanctions avoidance—directly results in the growing use of cryptocurrencies. The efficiency of the U.S. naval blockade and strict enforcement has driven merchants to look for other, non-bank transfer options since either too expensive or altogether unavailable are classic oil-export and dollar-clearing routes. Estimated to represent over 4.5% of worldwide Bitcoin mining, Iran's domestic cryptocurrency mining activities provide a regional supply of crypto assets that may be utilized to buy imports and get around international sanctions.
Although this acceptance of digital assets enables Iran to keep a certain level of trade continuity under embargo, it also exposes foreign partners—including exchanges, shipping companies, and commodity traders—to major asset-freeze and secondary-sanctions hazards. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Treasury Department has aggressively sanctioned Iranian crypto exchanges and cautioned foreign companies helping to support them. By targeting middlemen, the U.S. keeps expanding its enforcement actions therefore driving up compliance standards for world companies and upping the cost and difficulty of sanctions avoidance. This dynamic has caused the U.S.'s increased crackdown to be in constant cat-and-mouse game with Iran's use of digital assets and dark networks.
