Italy’s Cabinet approved a decree Tuesday, Oct. 20, making parents financially liable for damage caused by minors in vandalism or looting and creating a separate offense for violent participation in demonstrations, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said.
Meloni said the offense applies when groups of at least five people throw objects and endanger others during a demonstration. Meloni said the offense carries a maximum of five years in prison and a €20,000 fine.
The measures followed unrest in Milan after protests about household costs and public services, Reuters reported. Violence and looting broke out after the demonstrations began.
The decree also provided for 500 additional troops in Milan through Dec. 31, at a cost of €4.7 million, ANSA reported. EconoTimes previously covered the troop deployment and protest offense.
