European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Wednesday she hopes the incoming U.S. Congress will sustain support for Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia as lawmakers prepare to take office in January.

At a news conference in Brussels, Kallas said, “I hope that the new Congress and the new Senate will continue supporting Ukraine and also putting more pressure on Russia.” She said the pressure should signal to Moscow that it should end the war.

Anadolu Agency reported that Kallas separately described Europe and the United States as stronger together.

Democrats won control of the House and Senate in the Nov. 3 midterm elections, The Associated Press and Reuters reported. EconoTimes had previewed the midterms as a contest over control of Congress.

The incoming Congress is scheduled to begin its term Jan. 3, 2027.
