South Korean researchers developed a technology dubbed ‘contactless mobile pig weight manager’ that can 3D-scan a livestock pig to measure its weight.
The new technology makes use of a specialized algorithm to calculate the pig’s weight in less than 10 seconds, 60 times faster than traditional methods, with more than 95 percent accuracy.
ICT startup Illuvation has developed the said technology, according to the Institute of Planning and Evaluation for Technology in Food, Agriculture, and Forestry, which sponsored the startup.
According to Illuvation, the new weight manager has increased the chance of identifying grade 1 pigs by around 14 percentage points than previous methods.
Making weight-measuring quick and efficient will expedite the pig’s shipping process, which will save up to 10 percent and 4 percent of the pig farm’s annual feeding and management cost.
