Christine Lagarde’s Feb. 7, 2027, departure from the European Central Bank (ECB) may let European leaders choose her successor before France’s April presidential vote, France 24 reported.
The ECB said Oct. 29 that Lagarde notified both its Governing Council and European Council President Antonio Costa that she would step down. Her term is due to end in October 2027, leaving nearly nine months between her departure and its scheduled end.
EconoTimes previously reported the Feb. 7 exit date and start of the succession process.
France 24 reported that the early handover could give European leaders time to choose a successor before France’s April 2027 presidential election. The outlet also said eurosceptic candidates on the far right and far left were leading in opinion polls.
The European Council appoints the ECB president under EU treaty rules. Costa said the appointment process would start Oct. 29 and proceed without delay, with a timely decision as its goal.
