Last week, Floyd Mayweather Jr said on Instagram that he’s trying to put together a deal that would have him fighting Manny Pacquiao again. This time, however, it’s going to be an exhibition match rather than a serious 12-rounder with a title on the line.
After the video went viral, Manny Pacquiao questioned the format, adding that if Floyd Mayweather Jr is really serious, they should make it a real fight. The undefeated boxer has since remained reticent about the topic, and it’s becoming clear that this is one of his antics again.
Meanwhile, Manny Pacquiao appears uninterested in an exhibition match as he has now shortlisted who he wants to fight next. While the fighting senator is hoping that Floyd Mayweather Jr will agree to a sequel bout, he’s not holding his breath for him either. Thus, Danny and Mikey Garcia are two fighters that are being considered by the legend’s camp.
Manny Pacquiao’s camp isn’t considering Floyd Mayweather a future opponent
“Mikey Garcia and Danny Garcia are the two frontrunners for Manny Pacquiao's next fight, according to Pacquiao's MP Promotions representative Sean Gibbons. The WBA welterweight champion is planning to weigh-up his options within the next month or so,” boxing journalist Michael Benson tweeted. Does this mean that the Filipino slugger will fight Floyd Mayweather Jr after going through the aforementioned candidate?
That’s highly unlikely, Freddie Roach said that Manny Pacquiao’s future opponent would either be Errol Spence Jr or Terrence Crawford, whoever wins between both men. Should negotiations come through, of course, The Sun reported. In the meantime, Floyd Mayweather Jr is still trying to bring hype to his other exhibition matches that will likely mirror what he did last year when he fought Japan’s Tenshin Nasukawa.
Floyd Mayweather Jr is worried about injuries
The American boxer has time and again said that he’s no longer interested in boxing professionally as he’s worried about injuries. At 42 years old, Floyd Mayweather Jr is no longer the fighter he once was, and the risk of injury is higher now that he’s passed his prime. The same thing can be said to Manny Pacquiao, but it appears that the icon still has some gas left in him to cap his already legendary career.
In any case, it’s a good thing that Floyd Mayweather Jr isn’t fighting the senator since that match will likely end up as a snooze-fest. Indeed, Forbes even published an article after the two collided four years ago, labeling the massive disappointing bout as “The Death of Boxing.” Manny Pacquiao, of course, is trying to correct that narrative.
