The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) expects to temporarily suspend flight operations at Washington’s Reagan National Airport on August 23 as the capital hosts the Freedom 250 Grand Prix IndyCar race.
The planned flight pause will run from 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. local time (1415 GMT to 1715 GMT), according to the FAA. The temporary restriction is intended to support the major motorsports event taking place in Washington, D.C., and could affect travelers using Reagan National Airport during the three-hour window.
The Freedom 250 Grand Prix is scheduled for August 22 and 23, with IndyCar racing through the streets of Washington as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
General admission to the Washington IndyCar race is free, making the event accessible to spectators interested in watching the action in the nation’s capital. Fans seeking a premium experience can purchase access to the event’s “Champions Club.” According to the Freedom 250 Grand Prix website, the exclusive two-day race weekend package costs $5,000 per person.
The upcoming Reagan National Airport flight suspension is not the first time the FAA has temporarily restricted operations at the airport to accommodate major events in Washington.
On July 4, Reagan National Airport temporarily halted flights to support Independence Day celebrations in the capital. That closure resulted in hundreds of flight cancellations. Airport operations were also suspended on June 14 during U.S. President Donald Trump’s Army anniversary parade.
Travelers planning to fly through Reagan National Airport on August 23 should be aware that the Freedom 250 Grand Prix-related airspace restrictions could cause flight delays, schedule changes or cancellations. Passengers with flights around the planned closure period may want to check directly with their airlines for the latest departure and arrival information as the race weekend approaches.
