“Marco Polo” season 3 has long been pulled out by Netflix. The streaming site confirmed the show’s cancellation in 2016, just after two seasons.
The show that first aired in 2014 was one of the original series that was canceled. “Marco Polo” season 3 was axed alongside “Bloodline,” Lillyhammer” and “Hemlock Grove.”
The TV series featured unfamiliar cast but it gained good feedback when it was first released. The production of “Marco Polo” season 1 reportedly cost $90 million since it employed around 400 production staff and 160 people were assigned in its art department.
Then again, even with the nice backdrop, effects and everything else, “Marco Polo” season 3 failed to make it on air. So, how did this happened? According to Brian Lowry of Variety, Netflix did not renew the show because, “While ‘Marco Polo’ possesses scope, scale and an inordinate amount of exposed skin, the series exhibits only a sporadic pulse. This leaves a property that can be fun taken strictly on its own terms, but deficient in the binge-worthy qualities upon which Netflix’s distribution system has relied.”
In any case, in a newer report from Cross Map, the outlet mentioned that some people believe that “Marco Polo” season 3 would still be revived. It pointed out that the series offers fresh ideas and diversity that other shows do not possess. Although it is a Hollywood-made TV program, 97 percent of its cast members are Asians so this is a strong point that sets it apart from the common US-made shows.
Likewise, in The Hollywood Reporter’s Full TV Executives Roundtable interview, Netflix's COO Ted Sarandos talked about the future of “Marco Polo” season 3 with TV executives including HBO’s Richard Plepler, AMC’s Josh Sapan, NBCUniversal’s Bonnie Hammer and A+E’s Nancy Dubuc but they did not come up with a solid agreement yet. Details of their discussion were not revealed yet so it is still uncertain if the show will be given a green light. Stay tuned for updates as reports stated the renewal may come soon.
