U.S. First Lady Melania Trump said Wednesday that she remains in ongoing contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s team as part of efforts to secure the return of Ukrainian children taken to Russia since the start of the Ukraine war. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Melania Trump said discussions are actively underway and expressed hope for progress in the near future, though she declined to provide specific details about the talks.
According to an East Wing spokesperson, communication channels have remained open since Melania Trump sent a personal letter to President Putin last August regarding abducted Ukrainian children. The letter was reportedly hand-delivered by President Donald Trump. Since the First Lady began advocating on the issue, 15 Ukrainian children have been returned home, including seven who were reunited with their families in December. The White House has framed these returns as humanitarian successes amid ongoing diplomatic tensions.
Ukraine has accused Russia of abducting at least 19,000 Ukrainian children and relocating them to Russia or Russian-occupied territories without the consent of parents or legal guardians following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Ukrainian officials and international organizations have described the removals as forced deportations. Russia has consistently denied the allegations, arguing that children were evacuated to protect them from active combat zones.
The First Lady’s comments came on the same day Russian and Ukrainian officials described recent U.S.-led negotiations aimed at ending the four-year-old conflict as “productive.” These talks took place despite continued hostilities, including recent Russian drone strikes and a record number of ballistic missile attacks on Ukrainian territory earlier this week.
Melania Trump, who has largely maintained a low public profile during President Trump’s second term, has selectively engaged in humanitarian diplomacy. On Wednesday, she also met at the White House with Keith and Aviva Siegel, Israeli American hostages who were recently freed, underscoring her focus on international humanitarian issues.
Her involvement highlights a softer diplomatic channel focused on child welfare and hostage advocacy, even as broader geopolitical negotiations over the Ukraine war continue.
