Amid mounting concerns over the coronavirus pandemic, Vice President Mike Pence urged everyone to remain calm saying that the “average American at low risk” of contracting serious illness due to the pathogen. However, he also highlighted the fact that to keep the virus’ spread in check, everyone needs to cooperate and even gave simple tips that could help prevent its spread.

“The risk of serious illness for the average American remains low,” Mike Pence wrote in an article published in USA Today. “But the risk is heavily weighted to the elderly with underlying health conditions.”

The Vice President also urged every American to do their part in helping slow down the spread of the virus. Limiting the number of new cases is crucial in saving the lives of those most vulnerable to the disease as it would mean that health authorities can dedicate more resources to them.

Pence also highlighted the need to self-isolate especially for those who are sick. Older Americans, as well as those who have serious health issues, need to stay at home as well as even stay away from other people during the next few weeks.

Travel must only be done if absolutely necessary. “No one should visit a nursing home, retirement home or long-term care facility unless to provide necessary care,” the VP added. “All Americans should avoid unnecessary travel, restaurants, bars, public food courts and gathering in groups of more than 10 people.” Pence also encouraged people to work from home if possible.

The VP also encouraged people to practice common sense to help protect their health and those of their families. Simple steps such as hand washing and disinfecting frequently used items and surfaces can go a long way in keeping the virus from spreading.

Mike Pence is also hopeful that a coronavirus vaccine might be available soon. “A vaccine for the coronavirus has already begun a phase 1 clinical trial,” he said. “The president has dramatically expanded access to telemedicine for seniors on Medicare. And the Health and Human Services Department is collaborating with Johnson & Johnson to develop treatments for coronavirus infections, while actively soliciting proposals for other medical products to help combat the virus.”

“If all of us can take these important steps requested by the president over the next two weeks, then we can be confident that we will get through this, and we will see a better, healthier future for America,” Pence concluded.
