With Spain’s Nov. 29 election approaching, Argentine President Javier Milei met Vox leader Santiago Abascal during a Madrid visit when he also missed summit events, MercoPress reported.
Argentina’s Presidential Office confirmed the meeting and shared a photograph, describing Abascal as a lawmaker who is also running for president. The office did not specify when they met; MercoPress placed the encounter on Wednesday evening.
MercoPress reported that Milei missed the opening of the 30th Ibero-American Summit at Madrid’s Teatro Real and a dinner hosted by Spain’s King and Queen at the Royal Palace. The outlet said Argentina’s government had not explained his absence.
In a post, Abascal thanked Milei for attending the summit and called him a “friend and ally.” MercoPress said this was Milei’s second Madrid visit in two weeks. During an Oct. 21 visit, Milei called Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez an “unpresentable dictator” and “corrupt,” and did not meet Abascal, the outlet reported.
MercoPress said Milei was expected at Thursday’s plenary alongside Sánchez and King Felipe VI. EconoTimes previously reported that Milei and Sánchez were due at the same summit session.
