An increasing number of iPhone X users have aired their complaints about how easy it is for the device’s camera lens's protective glasses to crack and that it costs too much to have it repaired.
In recent weeks, reports have noted that more people are seeing the glass layer that covers their iPhone X's rear camera lens suddenly cracking. It is important to note that this issue has been experienced by a number of iPhone X owners as early as January — which was barely two months since the devices were delivered.
Meanwhile, a Forbes report also noted that Apple’s only way to address the issue is to replace the entire unit that can cost $549 or more for some iPhone X users, especially those who did not subscribe to Apple Care services upon purchasing their devices.
To this day, the official count of affected devices has not been determined by Apple. However, the number of customers complaining about cracked iPhone X camera lens covers was apparently enough for the issue to be dubbed the “Lensgate.”
Apple has also yet to address the issue in an official statement. Because of this, users can only guess what the common denominator is among the cracking camera glass covers. But reading customer reports and online posts, one can observe that there is an array of possible causes suggested by customers who have experienced the problem, thus leading to more unanswered questions.
According to a previous report from 9ToMac, some affected users attributed the issue to extremely cold weather, but users residing in locations with typically warmer temperatures think otherwise. But if there is a more common statement among disappointed customers, it is the claim that they have never dropped their devices, and many maintain that they have always used a protective case since purchasing their iPhone X.
Since the release of the iPhone 7, Apple has claimed that it uses pure sapphire on the glass cover of the camera lens, which the company has also maintained to be highly scratch-resistant.
