Illinois state Rep. Nabeela Syed, 27, won a seat in the state Senate, Gulf News reported, moving from the House into a new role in state lawmaking after entering office at 23.

The Democrat defeated Republican state Sen. Darby Hills in Illinois’ 26th Senate District in the Nov. 3 election, the outlet reported. EconoTimes previously covered the Senate race and the candidates’ differing approaches to data center rules.

Illinois General Assembly records list Syed as the representative for House District 51 beginning in January 2023, according to earlier EconoTimes coverage. Gulf News reported that she won the district in 2022 at age 23, defeating Republican Chris Bos, and secured another House term in 2024. The outlet said she was the youngest woman to win a seat in the state’s General Assembly.

Syed grew up in Palatine, Illinois, and her parents moved to the United States from Hyderabad during the 1980s, Gulf News reported. She studied political science and business administration at the University of California, Berkeley. Before entering office, she worked in digital strategy for a nonprofit focused on civic engagement, the outlet said.

Gulf News said her House work included efforts to make health care more affordable, as well as work on schools, voter participation and consumer protections. Her Senate campaign put household costs and health care access alongside concerns about data center expansion.

Earlier EconoTimes reporting on her data center platform said Syed proposed requiring companies driving electricity demand to cover related costs and disclose energy use, water consumption and noise impacts. That is a campaign proposal, not a finding about who currently pays those costs. Gulf News said her Senate seat will give her a broader role in state lawmaking for residents of the 26th District.
