Nasdaq’s Oct. 15 settlement report showed its Capital Market’s increase more than offset a decline on Nasdaq Global Market, lifting total short interest by 62.7 million shares across the exchange and revealing opposite moves beneath the aggregate.
The Nasdaq Capital Market had 4,547,071,138 shares in short positions across 1,659 securities, up from 4,436,257,542 shares across 1,667 securities at the Sept. 30 settlement. On Nasdaq Global Market, short positions fell to 18,609,329,855 shares from 18,657,486,300, while the count remained at 3,885 securities.
Together, the changes brought Nasdaq’s total to 23,156,400,993 shares across 5,544 securities, 62,657,151 more shares and eight fewer securities than at the previous settlement. The average daily volume measure rose to 2.93 days from 2.49. The market-level figures add detail to EconoTimes’ earlier report on the aggregate increase.
Nasdaq’s total draws on broker-dealer disclosures across firms, regardless of their exchange affiliations. It records positions still open on a settlement date; daily short-sale volume is a separate measure. FINRA receives short-interest reports twice a month. Firms have until 6 p.m. ET, two business days after each designated settlement, to submit them.
