National Grid Electricity Transmission has applied for outline planning permission for a 400 kV substation at Dorman Point, within the Teesworks industrial site. Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council’s register lists the application as valid, with no decision posted; its consultation expiry date is Nov. 11, 2026.

Sky News reported that the company signed a deal the previous week to purchase more than 70 acres at Dorman Point. Matt Pearce, National Grid’s head of lands, described the agreement as “an important step forward in the development of the new substation” in a statement quoted by Sky.

The council application describes a substation and associated works, including a temporary connection arrangement and construction compound. It does not state the project’s power capacity, cost or construction schedule. Teesworks chairman Chris Musgrave told Sky the site was being made available for “what is expected to be the UK’s largest substation.” The council filing does not provide comparative data to verify that description.

A separate data-center campus at The Foundry has reserved matters approval from the council. The approved plan includes data halls, offices, a substation and battery stores. A South Tees Development Corporation board paper described it as an AI data center and put its development area at approximately 5.5 million square feet.

Sky cited unnamed sources saying National Grid’s proposed substation would supply a neighboring data center. The public planning records do not identify the campus’s power supplier or confirm a connection agreement.
