CNBC reported Monday that Nebius, CoreWeave and Iren were down more than 4% apiece before U.S. markets opened, while investors questioned the sector’s debt-funded expansion.
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said Sunday on X that debt markets had nearly stopped funding companies without substantial revenue beyond AI data centers, according to CNBC’s account of his post. Musk predicted at least 200 neocloud providers would face “guppy-level death and consolidation” and said few would survive.
Investors were already questioning the sector’s reliance on debt, CNBC reported. Separately, they were weighing whether the broader build-out of AI infrastructure would deliver long-term returns.
Neoclouds provide computing capacity for AI workloads.
Musk had also dismissed a possible SpaceX purchase of distressed neocloud firms as “pointless” on Oct. 25. That comment concerned a potential acquisition, while Sunday’s warning addressed access to debt financing.
