Based on true-story, Making A Murderer is a 10-part documentary series directed by Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos. Netflix announced that the full series will debut on December 18th, and will get a two-episode preview at the DOC NYC film festival on November 13th, and The Verge reported.
Making A Murderer tells the story of Steven Avery, who served 18 years in prison for rape conviction and was later freed when DNA analysis linked the crime to another man.
Following his release, Avery and his attorneys filed a $36 million federal lawsuit against Manitowoc County, its former sheriff, Thomas Kocourek, and its former district attorney, Denis Vogel. However, in the midst of the civil case, Deadline reports, he became the prime suspect in a murder, for which he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
“There are an unbelievable number of twists and turns in the story arc of Making A Murderer, it feels like it has to be fictional,” said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary Programming. “Ricciardi and Demos have navigated very complex terrain and skillfully woven together an incredible series that leaves you feeling like you’re right in the middle of the action.”
The series examines what went wrong in the first case including prosecutorial misconduct, allegations of police, evidence tampering and witness coercion, Deadline added.
“If we had not been there to witness these events we would have trouble believing they actually occurred. Our goal has always been to share that experience with viewers. Our partnership with Netflix has allowed us to tell this story in a way that wouldn’t have been possible anywhere else,” said Ricciardi and Demos.
