The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced that all mailed packages from China will require formal customs entry starting Tuesday under new tariffs. According to a notice posted in the Federal Register on Monday, Chinese imports previously eligible for temporary duty exemptions will now face a 10% tariff.
President Donald Trump has delayed similar tariffs on Canada and Mexico until March 1, making Chinese shipments the immediate focus of the policy. The CBP has issued guidance for shippers on handling affected packages, particularly those with manifests filed before the tariffs take effect.
"As we transition to execution of the Executive Order, it is extremely important that the trade maintain awareness of the shipments they are responsible for and are aware of the messaging that they are receiving from CBP," the agency stated.
These changes mark a significant shift in U.S.-China trade policy, affecting businesses and consumers relying on imports. Shippers are advised to review compliance requirements and monitor updates from CBP.
