Nigel Farage, former leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and a member of the European Parliament roasted the chief of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker during his speech at the Strasberg parliament. The criticism over the European Union’s response to violence incited by the Spanish government on regular voters at Catalonia Independence referendum is piling up, where police didn’t spare even the senior citizens and women were dragged from the booth by pulling hair.
Such violence over people who are expressing their desire through a democratic procedure has once again brought focus to the criticism that the European Union is an undemocratic one, where unelected commissioners of the European Union and the European Council have the sole power to propose legislation. Mr. Farage highlighted while he called the European Union undemocratic many a times in the past even in his fiercest criticism, he didn’t envisage such brutality towards the people of a member state and said that he is thankful that the UK is leaving such a bloc. He said, “I think European citizens will be stunned that Mr. Juncker comes here for his one appearance and there is absolutely no mention made of the dramatic events that have taken place inside a European Union member state, that is allegedly a modern democracy…..One of the reasons that I always wanted Brexit was because I thought the system of lawmaking whereby the Commission has the sole right to initiate legislation was something that would in fact damage, and in the end destroy, any concept of national democracy….And yeah, I’ve called the European Union undemocratic, I’ve called it anti-democratic, but never, ever in my fiercest criticisms here did I think we would see the police of a member state of the union injuring 900 people in an attempt to stop them going out to vote."

Earlier this week, Serbian President accused the European Union of a double standard as it supported the independence of the breakaway province of Kosovo without a referendum but looking another side when it came to Catalonia.
