The delay for Nintendo's next-generation console has just lengthened. Multiple sources indicate that Nintendo is currently positioning the release of its successor to the Switch for the first quarter of 2025, approximately eight years after the initial Nintendo Switch was introduced.
Nintendo Delays 'Switch 2' Launch to 2025, Aiming for Stronger Game Lineup
In a new video, Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe, citing multiple sources, reported that Nintendo recently briefed publishers on an updated launch window for the "Switch 2" console. Subsequent reports from VGC and Eurogamer, which also cite sources, confirm this rumor and assert that Nintendo has moved back its original target date for the second half of 2024 to the first quarter of 2025.
Based on information cited by multiple sources, Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe claimed in a new video published on Friday that Nintendo recently updated publishers on the launch window for the "Switch 2" console. The initial projection for Nintendo to release the next-generation console in the latter part of 2024 has been extended to the first quarter of 2025, according to Eurogamer and VGC, who have since corroborated this speculation with sources.
The delayed release of the Switch 2, according to a report by VGC, could be because Nintendo is preparing "stronger first-party software for the console."
Nintendo Prioritizes Switch Amid 'Switch 2' Console's Reported Delay
Nintendo has not provided an official announcement regarding the status of the Switch's successor or a possible release date for the system. However, numerous reports had previously predicted its release in 2024.
According to Polygon, Nintendo's "main business" for the upcoming fiscal year, which spans from April 2024 to March 2025, will be the original Switch, according to a recent Investor Briefing by Company President Shuntaro Furukawa. Additionally, Furukawa has guaranteed a "smooth transition" to any platform of the next iteration.
Despite its age, Nintendo's current console-handheld hybrid continues to sell well. Nintendo has sold over 139 million Switch systems, ranking it the company's second-best-selling console in history.
If the Switch 2 is postponed until 2025, Nintendo enthusiasts will be compelled to rely on the lineup that the company has presently unveiled. After the recent release of "Mario vs. Donkey Kong" on Friday, "Princess Peach: Showtime," "Luigi's Mansion 2 HD," and "Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door" remains to be released. Although "Metroid Prime 4," an eagerly anticipated sequel, is also on Nintendo's release schedule, it lacks a specific release window.
