In the months leading up to the launch of Nintendo’s latest video game console that also functions as a portable handheld called the Switch, there were a lot of speculations as to its performances and what it can offer. At launch, reviewers were finally given a chance to test it out and give their thoughts on the unit. As it turns out, the Switch is a fine product that comes with a few issues but is still worth getting.
As The New York Times points out, most of the reviews of the console so far have been fairly positive except for a few gripes on features that are still undelivered. Reviewers are also having a hard time agreeing on the Switch’s hybrid nature, with some praising its handheld capability while others vilify it.
To be fair, there really are quite a few things going for the product, with the fact that it’s a fun system being its biggest strength. The fact that players can “switch” to different modes of gaming is a huge plus as well, as Tom’s Guide notes. It allows for a variety of play styles that can be “switched” on the fly. It doesn’t take up a lot of room either, which is always a plus for any kind of gadget.
On that note, the weaknesses of any console will need to be discussed eventually, and the Switch has an unfortunate number of them. For one thing, there’s the woefully limited battery life, which can really dampen one’s enthusiasm for the handheld aspect. There’s also the matter of dead pixels on the screen of the Switch itself.
Players are already complaining about this rather common feature on LCD screens, Gizmodo reports, which Nintendo has already addressed in a cavalier fashion. On the troubleshooting page for the console, Nintendo asserts that dead pixels are not a sign of defect and should be considered normal.
