Nissan Motor Company recently issued a recall for some of its pickup truck models. More than 200,000 units are affected by the recall.
Nissan Motor’s recall was due to the risk of vehicles rolling away while parked. The automaker’s Nissan Frontier and Titan with model years 2020 to 2023 are part of the recall, and as of this time, it was reported that 203,223 of these were already sold.
According to CNN Business, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed that there is an issue with certain models of Nissan’s Frontier and Titan pickup trucks. These could roll away while parked due to the transmission parking pawl, which stops vehicles from moving. The NHTSA said that this auto part may not engage when the vehicles are parked.
To prevent unfortunate accidents, owners of the affected pickup trucks were advised to use the parking brake each time they park their vehicles. This is a voluntary recall from Nissan, and it was clarified to be a separate case from the recall for some trucks that was issued in June this year.
At that time, Nissan Motor recalled over 180,000 Frontiers and Titans with model years - from 2020 to 2022. The company cited the same issue as this latest recall for the reason.
While this problem already emerged a few months ago, Nissan has not yet found a solution to fix it. While the company is still figuring out how to fix the transmission parking pawl, owners were told to use the parking brake for the time being.
It was also reiterated that while the new recall is similar to the one in June, the problem is not identical. Thus, the solution for them may also be slightly different.
CarScoops reported that based on the documents that were filed by Nissan with the traffic and safety agency, the “resistance between the parking rod and wedge inside of the transmission housing may inhibit movement of the wedge and parking pawl.”
The company explained that if this happens, the pawl which holds the vehicle in place while parked may not function properly. This means it may not engage, so there is a chance the vehicle may roll away. It was noted that this condition is only for trucks with a 9-speed automatic transmission.
Meanwhile, owners of the affected Nissan Frontier and Titan will be officially notified about the recall on or before Nov. 1. Owners may also contact the automaker’s service line at 1-800-867-7669 to know more details about the recall.
