Early this week, the Networks division of industry giant Nokia and wireless startup Artemis announced that they have reached an agreement to continue developing a technology that would improve the capacity of LTE networks. Slash Gear reports that the agreement will have Nokia and Artemis conduct proof-of-concept tests to develop pCell technology in large, public spaces like indoor stadiums that encounter LTE overcapacity.
IT Wire explained that pCell is a breakthrough wireless technology that would increase the capacity of current 4G LTE networks by a factor of 50-plus times. If this was achieved, the technology would achieve 5G performance on iPhone, Android and other unmodified mobile devices.
Executive vice president and chief technology officer Hossein Moiin for Nokia Networks said the agreement would allow both firms to see whether the technology would accomplish its goal outside in an ordinary setting.
“To get to the bottom of how real it is, we have to take further steps, which means we have to deploy it in a real setting outside the lab. Once we do that, we’ll know the answer,” he told New York Times.
