North Carolina farmers face economic pressures as the state’s election contests become less certain for Republicans ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms, France 24 reported Monday.

The report cited higher diesel prices, costly fertilizer and the effects of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on global markets as sources of uncertainty for farmers. It described North Carolina as rural and said agriculture is linked to 20% of jobs in the state.

France 24 also described a broader challenge for Republicans, saying Trump’s unpopularity is weighing on the party and some seats once viewed as strongholds have become less secure. The U.S. midterm elections are scheduled for Nov. 3.
