Since Samsung released the Galaxy Fold, the foldable display has been pegged as the next smartphone trend. But will OnePlus immediately join the bandwagon by applying the said technology on OnePlus 8?
The Chinese smartphone maker has just released its OnePlus 7 series this week. But fans are already wondering what do they have in store for OnePlus 8. Since the anticipated device is not slated to be released until 2020, some fans and reports consider the possibility that it would be designed with a foldable display.
In a recent interview with the Italian publication Republicca, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau explained why they might not release a folding smartphone anytime soon. Lau said, however, that OnePlus has been “considering” on developing a foldable device for more than a year, but it may not happen even for OnePlus 8.
Lau explained that incorporating a folding display tend to bring up the price of a device outrageously. "With this technology, costs are high," Lau said (via CNET). "But the value to the end user doesn't seem to correlate." OnePlus 8 might be the company’s take on introducing a next-generation smartphone, which, as Lau commented, is not the case for the currently available folding smartphones.
However, this does not mean that OnePlus 8 will not arrive with major surprises. As with the case of OnePlus 7 Pro that was just announced this week, the tech company introduced its first-ever smartphone with a motorized pop-up front-facing camera.
New lineups of OnePlus smartphones, commonly unveiled in spring, are anticipated to be powered by the latest premium mobile chip from Qualcomm. For example, the OnePlus 7 series runs with the Snapdragon 855 making it possible for the device to support 5G network in upcoming updates.
OnePlus will most likely introduce another batch of flagship smartphones later this year, possibly refreshed models of OnePlus 7. Meanwhile, OnePlus 8 will most likely be unveiled in May or June 2020.
