OpenAI has added Magnite and PubMatic as ways to buy ChatGPT placements, giving advertisers more campaign-management channels while leaving ad selection and placement decisions with OpenAI.

Campaign setup on either platform includes spend limits, bidding and ad uploads. Magnite and PubMatic connect ad buyers with publisher inventory. An OpenAI spokesperson said the partnerships are designed to fit advertisers’ established campaign workflows.

The arrangements sit alongside OpenAI’s beta Ads Manager, introduced in May. Businesses can use the self-service tool to create and manage campaigns. The partner platforms add options for campaign setup, while OpenAI’s own system determines where ads appear and how placements are delivered.

ChatGPT advertising has expanded beyond its initial U.S. test. OpenAI began running ads on Feb. 9 for logged-in adults using the Free and Go plans. By Oct. 21, ads were available in 89 countries, and more than 100,000 advertisers had run campaigns. Plus, Pro and Enterprise plans remained ad-free at that point.

OpenAI said Aug. 31 that its advertising business had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate. That measure describes the pace of revenue at the time; it does not mean the company had earned $1 billion over a full year.

OpenAI says its ads are labeled and do not affect ChatGPT’s answers. Its system for ad delivery operates separately from the technology that generates replies.
