OpenAI is raising the stakes in AI innovation with its o3 and o3 mini models, designed for superior reasoning and complex problem-solving. Scheduled for early 2024 releases, these models target leadership in the fierce race against Google’s Gemini AI.
OpenAI Tests Advanced o3 AI Models Amid Growing Rivalry
In an indication of increasing rivalry with competitors like Google to develop smarter models able to handle complicated situations, OpenAI announced on Friday that it was testing new reasoning AI models, o3 and o3 small, Reuters shares.
According to CEO Sam Altman, the AI startup intends to release o3 small by January's end and complete o3 after that. This is because the company believes that stronger large language models would be able to surpass current models, which in turn will attract more investors and users.
With support from Microsoft, OpenAI launched o1 AI models in September with the intention of devoting more resources to query processing in order to tackle challenging challenges.
The AI company had stated in a blog post that the o1 models can reason their way through complicated tasks and tackle more difficult challenges in math, science, and coding than earlier models.
New o3 Models Expected to Outperform Previous Versions
According to OpenAI, their newly released o3 and o3 small models are going to be more powerful than their earlier o1 models. These models are now undergoing internal safety testing.
An application window for external researchers to evaluate o3 models will be open until January 10th, according to the GenAI pioneer, who announced the launch.
Per Yahoo Finance, the November 2022 debut of ChatGPT by OpenAI set off an AI arms race. In October, OpenAI closed a $6.6 billion investment round, aided by the rising profile of the company and the introduction of new products.
Google Gemini Challenges OpenAI in AI Leadership
Confronting Alphabet's earlier in December, Google unveiled Gemini, its second-generation artificial intelligence model, in an effort to reassert its position as the industry leader in artificial intelligence.
