Posts on Optimism’s governance forum show the buyback purchased 9,451,924 Optimism (OP) tokens, putting Superchain revenue toward a plan the Optimism Foundation says is intended to benefit tokenholders as network activity grows.

An Aug. 7, 2026, forum update gave the cumulative total. The forum records three completed purchases funded by revenue from January through March.

The program used 95.8 Ether (ETH) from January revenue to acquire 1,574,817 OP. It spent 367.905 ETH from February revenue on 6,951,453 OP, then used 50.16 ETH from March revenue to purchase another 925,654 OP. Together, those transactions account for the reported total.

Governance approved the program in a vote that ended Jan. 28, 2026. The plan allocates 50% of incoming Superchain revenue to monthly OP purchases for an initial 12 months. The Superchain is a network of blockchains built with Optimism’s technology.

The Optimism Foundation presented the purchases as a way to connect benefits for OP tokenholders with growth in Superchain activity. The proposal places acquired tokens in the Collective treasury without assigning them a single final use. It allows for distributions to tokenholders who help secure the network, funding for ecosystem expansion or a burn that would remove tokens from circulation.

Governance participant GFXlabs opposed the plan before the vote. It argued that repurchases made little financial sense while OP distributions continued to fund operations.

The proposal calls for a review after the initial 12-month period. It gives no fixed calendar date for that review.
