Danish renewable energy company Orsted announced Monday that it will acquire the remaining 49.9% stake in Britain's Gunfleet Sands 1 and 2 offshore wind farm for approximately £15 million, securing full ownership of the 172-megawatt (MW) renewable energy project.
Orsted currently owns 50.1% of the offshore wind facility and plans to purchase the outstanding shares from its investment partners. The transaction will be completed through a buyback option established under the original partnership agreements.
The acquisition is expected to close in November 2026, subject to customary closing conditions.
Located approximately seven kilometers off the Essex coast in eastern England, Gunfleet Sands 1 and 2 has been generating renewable electricity since 2010. The offshore wind farm produces enough power annually to supply more than 125,000 households across the United Kingdom, according to Orsted.
By gaining complete ownership, the Danish energy company expects greater operational flexibility and improved control over long-term decisions involving the wind farm.
The acquisition will also allow Orsted to evaluate future options for the aging offshore wind facility, including potentially extending its operational lifespan beyond its original expected service period.
"Gunfleet Sands 1 & 2 has been part of the UK’s renewable energy story since 2010," said Richard Bodal Hansen, Orsted's UK Country Manager.
The transaction reinforces Orsted's position in Britain's offshore wind energy sector, where the company operates 12 offshore wind farms.
Together, these projects generate approximately 7% of the UK's electricity, highlighting Orsted's significant contribution to the country's renewable energy supply and electricity infrastructure.
The company's decision to consolidate ownership of Gunfleet Sands reflects its focus on managing existing renewable energy assets while assessing opportunities to maximize their long-term operational value.
Orsted also indicated that it would continue reviewing similar buyback rights and potential acquisitions across its portfolio. However, future transactions will be evaluated individually, considering the financial and operational merits of each project.
The latest investment underscores the importance of maintaining established offshore wind infrastructure as Britain continues relying on renewable energy generation to support its electricity needs.
