It has been a while since Blizzard announced the development of “Overwatch 2,” but fans have yet to receive the biggest news about the sequel – its release date. However, a recent report from a noted tipster suggests players may have to wait longer than anticipated.
The report comes from a leaker, who goes by the name Metro on Twitter, who said that “multiple people” close to an “original source” have claimed that the development of “Overwatch 2” is taking more time than the studio anticipated. “From what I can gather a release in 2022 does not seem likely anymore,” Metro added.

I've heard from multiple people close to my original source with OW2 that the development is taking longer than expected. From what I can gather a release in 2022 does not seem likely anymore. I hope this is false and I'm proven wrong.
The report comes after Activision Blizzard said in a Q2 2021 financial results document published last week that the “Overwatch 2” development has reached an “important internal milestone in recent weeks.”
Blizzard has yet to discuss the game’s launch timeline. “Overwatch 2” does not even have an announced release window yet. However, fans have been speculating that the game could launch as early as 2022 after an Activision Blizzard financial report last February cited, “And at the same time, we are making significant progress against our development pipeline for other key intellectual properties, which we expect to fuel further growth in 2022 and beyond.”
It is worth noting that Metro had previously proven to have an insider after accurately leaking the addition of hero Ashe, GameRant recalls. But fans waiting for “Overwatch 2” should still take this with a grain of salt since game development timelines often change.
Game delays have also become a common announcement in recent months as studios still cope with the effects of the pandemic. Specifically, in Blizzard’s case, the developer has already confirmed one of its anticipated titles, “Diablo Immortal,” is no longer slated to arrive in 2022 due to changes being applied to the game’s PvP and PvE features, as well as its controller support. And with “Overwatch 2” not even having a publicly confirmed launch timeline yet, a delay cannot be ruled out.
On a positive note, Activision Blizzard also stated in its Q2 2021 financial report that the developer plans to provide more updates about “Overwatch 2” after a previous well-received community update stream. There is also no specific timeline for the next teasers, but the company said it should arrive “in the coming months as they approach the later stages of production.”
