June 28, 2017 - The Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR) is an annual ranking of academic institutions related to research, which is based on three indicators to determine the quality of higher education: research performance, innovation results and social impact as measured by its visibility on the internet.

This year, the ranking considers four Peruvian universities with the highest weighted average: the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia (UPCH), the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences (UPC) and the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM).
INNOVATION AND VISIBILITY
In the innovation field, Scimago considers the impact of university research on the definition of patents. This means that the foreign companies that register a patent, cite in the bibliography the investigations of the professors of our University. Similarly, in the social area, the visibility of the university's website is considered, which includes the number of pages associated with the domain according to Google. However, Mg. Carlos Chávez, director of the Directorate of Research Management (abbreviation known in Spanish as DGI), explains that there are some initiatives of the university that are not recognized in this ranking:
"Something that the study of Scimago does not consider in the innovation item is the link between academia and productive sector from research. The PUCP leads in this type of companies at a national level, since it has more than one hundred projects in March. So also, in social area, the scope of social responsibility, which is a strong point of the PUCP, is not taken into account."
PROGRESS IN RESEARCH
The results of the last five years show significant growth in research for PUCP. This coincides with the institutional policy of support for research that led to the creation of the Vice-Rectorate for Research (VRI) and the Directorate for Research Management (abbreviation known in Spanish as DGI) in 2009.
"PUCP, despite not having specialties related to life sciences, stands out for having many areas that produce research. The reflection offered by Scimago is that a university that does not have life sciences but which has a great international visibility, as it happens with the PUCP, is quite rare," Chavez said.
PUCP's intention for the next few years is continue to maintain leadership at the national level and scale positions in international rankings to compete with higher education institutions abroad.
PUCP PATENTS
As part of the strategy to promote research and innovation within the university community, PUCP provides services for the protection and promotion of intellectual creations. To date, it has fifteen patents in force in the United States, China and Peru.
